Save ECID SHSH iOS 4 On Windows, Mac OSX Using TinyUmbrella

For the unaware, SHSH blobs or ECID SHSH is a unique signature given by Apple for each firmware. While restoring firmware on your iPhone or iPod Touch, iTunes checks the ECID SHSH of your device, and compares it with Apple’s servers. Should they be not matching, iTunes does not allow the firmware restoration.

This is why you need to save the SHSH blobs of your device before you upgrade firmware. This way, if you want to downgrade firmware in order to jailbreak, you will not have any problem with iTunes which otherwise will reject the restoration. Also note that you need to save ECID SHSH before there is a firmware upgrade available from Apple, which will then stop signing iOS 4.

Similar to AutoSHSH, TinyUmbrella is yet another tool to backup SHSH blobs (ECID SHSH) on your iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad. The latest version of TinyUmbrella supports iOS 4 on iPhone 3GS, iPad and iPod Touch 2G, 3G (iPhone 3G and iPod Touch non-MC model users do not need to save ECID SHSH).  There is no need to jailbreak iOS for saving the SHSH blobs using TinyUmbrella.

Here are the steps to save ECID SHSH (SHSH blobs) of iOS 4 on iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 2G, 3G.

1. Download and install TinyUmbrella, iTunes 9.1 or iTunes 9.2 (all download links at bottom).

2. Launch TinyUmbrella and connect your iPhone 3GS or iPod Touch 2G/3G to your Computer. On Windows 7, you may encounter a Windows Security Alert from Windows Firewall. Click Allow Access and continue.

3. With TinyUmbrella taking a back up of your SHSH blobs is completely automatic. Simply press ‘Save My SHSH’.

4. That’s it. TinyUmbrella will make the request through Cydia so that Cydia will have your device’s SHSH signatures ‘on-file’ immediately. So you have two copies of ECID SHSH, one local in the .shsh directory in the home directory. The other on Saurik’s servers.
