Download redsn0w 0.9.5 Beta To Jailbreak iPhone 3G 4.0 Firmware
Not long after the iPhone OS 4.0 firmware was announced, the iPhone Dev Team have released an update to their popular jailbreaking tool redsn0w. Redsn0w 0.9.5, still in Beta and currently available only for Mac OSX can jailbreak iPhone firmware 4.0 Beta.
Aimed to help developers of jailbreak apps update their software for the latest iPhone firmware, redsn0w 0.9.5 Beta is not for the average users. Note that the tool does not help you to hacktivate or unlock your iPhone. A proper developer UDID with Apple is required to get past the activation screen. Hence the reason behind not releasing the Windows version of redsn0w 0.9.5 Beta. Currently redsn0w 0.9.5 works with only iPhone 3G, and the firmware 4.0 beta 1.
Note: Do not upgrade to iPhone 4.0 in case you rely on a carrier unlock. iPhone 4.0 contains a baseband update, which will unlock your device.
Here are the steps to jailbreak your iPhone 3G using redsn0w 0.9.5 Beta:
1. Upgrade your firmware to iPhone OS 4.0 (iPhone1,2_4.0_8A230m_Restore.ipsw) using iTunes 9.1.
2. Activate your device with iTunes and your developer UDID.
3. Run redsn0w 0.9.5 (download link given below), browse and select the 4.0 firmware IPSW file for iPhone 3G.
4. In the next step, check ‘Install Cydia’ option, and hit ‘Next’.

5. In the following screen, you are asked to make sure that your device is both OFF and PLUGGED IN to your computer. Click ‘Next’.
6. Use DFU mode to complete the installation. For the unaware, in DFU mode, you will have to first hold down the POWER and HOME buttons for a few seconds. Later release the POWER button, still holding the HOME button till the installation begins.
7. That’s it. Your iPhone will reboot after installation, and comes up with jailbroken iPhone firmware 4.0.
Note: You will notice that Cydia has a blank white icon, and has no sources. Add the source http://apt.saurik.com/cydia-3.7 by going to the sources panel. Restart Cydia, and you should see that it has it’s original logo, as well as the standard sources.
